Oncology Nursing Foundation Awards $457,000 in Funding for Oncology Nursing Students
(June 11, 2021) PITTSBURGH — The Oncology Nursing Foundation awarded 100 academic scholarships this spring to aspiring oncology nursing students across the United States. In total, $457,000 was allocated from the Foundation’s endowment and special funds to support the 2021–2022 academic scholarship program. Scholarships will support the education of nursing students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees. Awards range from $3,000 to $7,500.
“Interest in oncology nursing educational scholarships remains strong in our communities,” said Anizia Karmazyn, executive director of the Oncology Nursing Foundation. “We are grateful to the numerous donors past and present who have anticipated the need by committing funds to support the educational aspirations of oncology nurses now and into the future.”
Donor contributions enable the Foundation to make a greater impact in the community, ultimately touching the lives of many, including patients and their families through the caring and expert practice of oncology nurses. The 2021-2022 academic scholarships were made possible thanks to the Foundation’s Mary Scherbring Fund, Ann Olson Fund, Ohio Practice Alliance Fund, as well as the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation and other longtime contributors to the Oncology Nursing Foundation.
“Receiving a Doctoral Academic Scholarship through the Oncology Nursing Foundation has provided me with a chance to learn additional knowledge and skills necessary for my dissertation work,” said Zhihong Zhang, MS, RN, University of Rochester, School of Nursing. “In addition, this scholarship provides great recognition and encouragement to my academic and professional development in the field of oncology nursing.”
The Oncology Nursing Foundation celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Created in 1981 by the Oncology Nursing Society, the mission of the Foundation is to support oncology nursing excellence. The Oncology Nursing Foundation has awarded more than $29 million in funding since its inception for education, research, and leadership development for oncology nurses to give them the opportunity to pursue excellence in delivering care to patients with cancer.
