Oncology Nursing Foundation Lectureship to Address Nurse Burnout Through Art and Science

(March 11, 2021) PITTSBURGH — The Oncology Nursing Foundation has chosen Tara Rynders, RN-BC, MFA, BSN, BA, the founder and artistic director of The Clinic, an arts and play-based company that provides workshops, performances, and research around burnout and secondary traumatic stress, as the 2021 Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial lecturer. Rynders, a nurse, dancer, and creative caregiver, will share a multimedia experience behind the art and science of caring for oneself and others. She will deliver the lecture on April 20 at 3:45 pm EST via a webinar format at ONS Congress™.

The Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial Lectureship, established nearly 40 years ago, supports an annual award lecture on a topic related to the psychosocial aspects of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and care and is presented by an individual involved in the fields of psychosocial oncology, cancer care, education, or research.

“I am so grateful and honored to present this lecture to oncology nurses and support the incredible work that they do every day,” said Rynders. “This presentation is an immersive invitation to care for oneself through truth-telling, self-compassion, creative expression, and, ultimately, the freedom to celebrate pleasure.”

During her presentation, Rynders will share her story of how she knows firsthand that the arts can support nurses and patients alike through burnout, grief, and joy. A live question and answer session with Rynders will be held immediately following the lecture.

“Mara Mogensen Flaherty was an inspiring young woman whose resilience helped others through education and survivorship advocacy,” said Oncology Nursing Foundation President Tracy Gosselin, PhD, RN, AOCN®, NEA-BC, FAAN.  “Similarly, Tara engages her own resiliency through the art of dance to support caregivers who inspire hope for their patients and families.”

The 2021 Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial Lectureship is presented in part through the generosity of Sarah Cannon, the Cancer Institute of HCA Healthcare.

The Oncology Nursing Foundation celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.  It was created by the Oncology Nursing Society in 1981 to accept charitable contributions to advance important activities like this lectureship on behalf of oncology nursing. The mission of the Oncology Nursing Foundation is to support oncology nursing excellence. Thanks to the generosity of individuals and institutions, the Oncology Nursing Foundation has awarded more than $29 million in funding since its inception for education, research, and leadership development for oncology nurses to give them the opportunity to pursue excellence in delivering care to patients with cancer.
